What Is Health Coaching?
Health coaching is one-on-one guidance from a trained coach to help someone set and reach personal health goals, things like improving nutrition, increasing physical activity, managing stress, or better managing a chronic condition. Unlike medical treatment, a health coach doesn’t diagnose or prescribe, they help someone build sustainable habits and stay accountable to their own goals.
What Does a Health Coach Typically Help With?
Common focus areas include weight management, nutrition habits, exercise routines, sleep, stress management, and support for chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension alongside a person’s regular medical care. Sessions are usually recurring (weekly or biweekly) rather than one-off, since behavior change tends to require ongoing support rather than a single conversation.
How Does Health Coaching Work as an Employer Benefit?
When offered through a workplace wellness program, health coaching is typically made available to all employees, either through phone or video sessions with a coach, sometimes paired with data from a health risk assessment or biometric screening to help target coaching toward the areas where an individual would benefit most. The main draw for employers is that unmanaged health risks, uncontrolled chronic conditions especially, are a significant driver of long-term healthcare costs, and coaching is one of the more direct ways to help address that before it becomes a bigger problem.
