What Is Environmental Wellness?
Environmental wellness is the sense of wellbeing that comes from the spaces you spend time in, your home, community, and workplace, and how safe, healthy, and supportive those surroundings are. It covers things like air and water quality, access to nature, and living or working in a space that doesn’t add unnecessary stress to daily life.
What Are Examples of Environmental Wellness?
Common examples include having access to clean air and safe drinking water, spending time in green or natural spaces, living or working somewhere free of harmful pollutants or excessive noise, and making sustainable choices that also support personal wellbeing, like reducing waste or choosing eco-friendly products. At a personal level, it’s often as simple as decluttering a space or getting outside regularly.
Why Does Environmental Wellness Matter?
Physical surroundings measurably affect stress levels, sleep quality, and overall health, a cluttered or poorly lit space adds friction to daily life in ways that are easy to underestimate. It’s included as one of the recognized dimensions of overall wellness because environment shapes behavior more than people tend to give it credit for.
How Does This Apply to the Workplace Specifically?
In a workplace context, environmental wellness shows up as air quality, natural light, ergonomic setup, noise levels, and access to outdoor or green space during the workday. It’s a less commonly measured pillar than others like financial or occupational wellness, but it’s still a real factor in how supported employees feel day to day, particularly for anyone spending long hours in the same physical space.
