Spot Bonus
Definition, Taxes & Typical Amounts
What Is a Spot Bonus?
A spot bonus (sometimes called a spot award) is a one-time, unplanned monetary reward given to an employee soon after a specific achievement, behavior, or contribution, outside of a company’s normal bonus cycle or performance review process.
When Do Employers Give Spot Bonuses?
Common triggers include going well beyond normal expectations on a project, stepping up during a crunch or crisis, exceptional customer feedback, or a specific contribution a manager wants to recognize before it fades into the background of a year-end review. The defining feature is timing: a spot bonus is given close to the moment it’s earned, rather than saved up and delivered months later.
How Is a Spot Bonus Different From Other Types of Bonuses?
This is worth clarifying, since “bonus” covers a lot of genuinely different things. A retention bonus is paid to keep someone from leaving, usually tied to a specific timeframe. A sign-on bonus is a one-time payment to accept a job offer. A discretionary bonus is typically an end-of-year or milestone-based payment tied to overall performance, planned in advance even if the amount isn’t guaranteed. A spot bonus is distinct from all of these: it’s unplanned, given in the moment, and tied to a specific recognized action rather than tenure, hiring, or a scheduled review cycle.
Why Do Employers Use Spot Bonuses?
The main advantage is immediacy. Recognition that arrives close to the achievement it’s rewarding tends to reinforce the specific behavior far more effectively than a mention in an annual review months later, by which point the employee may not even remember the details clearly. Spot bonuses also give managers a way to recognize contributions that wouldn’t otherwise fit neatly into a formal bonus structure or performance rating.
